Hello, friends! This is a draft from a few months ago. I reread Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse for the first time since I was a teenager. I’ve been working my way through Breaking Dawn, but honestly, the first hundred pages of these books (minus Twilight) are always a little slow. There is SO much explanation of what happened in the previous book — like, I know what happened! I just read it!
Eclipse, book or movie, has always been my least favorite of the Twilight series. It’s the one I always have to ask myself — “Now, what happens in this one?” And truly, even having finished the book… what even happened? The climax, what we’ve been waiting for, is over in one, singular, chapter. ONE!
Having read this book only once as a thirteen year old, reading it now, I have much more of a handle on Jacob Black’s disturbing behavior, that I surely did not understand upon my initial read, nor was I able to fully pick up on it during my rewatches of the movie. When I initially read the series, I was always team Edward, but in New Moon, I leaned slightly more towards Jacob, but reading Eclipse now, I certainly did not feel like she should end up with Jacob!
Another thing is Bella taking care of Charlie. This happens throughout the series, but it’s something I didn’t really think was odd when I read the series as a teenager. Reading it as an adult, I’m slightly horrified! Like, of course Bella chooses a 100+ year old vampire that has a large, wonderful family that takes care of her! While Charlie takes care of her more than Renee does, the Cullens are much more caring and attentive to her.
I honestly don’t have much to say about Eclipse! It just is there to move the series along so that Bella can get married to Edward! That’s it! Breaking Dawn is where the action is at. (Pardon my pun — lol!!!)
That being said… I do have such a fond memory of seeing this in theaters when it came out with my aunt and cousins. We went and got dinner and then we did the TRIPLE feature where the theater played Twilight, New Moon, and then the premiere of Eclipse. This book/movie series is not high art by any means and a lot of the themes are problematic, but it will always have a soft spot in my heart and my husband and I watch the whole series at least once a year when the weather starts to chill.
XOXO,
Mattie Mae
