The Last Thing He Told Me // Book Review

Hello, friends! I hope that all is well. I am SO backed up currently with book reviews. I’ve been reading so much lately and I just haven’t been updating the blog as I finish each book, so let’s get to changing that! Today we will be talking about the book, The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave.

This novel follows the story of Hannah Hall as she tries to untangle the mystery of her husband Owen’s disappearance. He leaves behind his daughter, Bailey, Hannah’s stepdaughter. Though the two have a strained relationship, they must work together to figure out where he went, why he left, and perhaps most importantly – will he ever come back?

I feel like I say this in every book review, but I have such a difficult time writing the summary of books because I don’t want to spoil anything! This book has been incredibly popular in the last couple of months, ending up as a #1 New York Times Best Seller. A lot of people found this book to be addictive, thrilling, and heartfelt. What are my thoughts on the matter?

Well…

I did not love this book. It took me a couple of weeks to make any headway in it, and even as I kept reading, I didn’t find myself particularly invested in the characters or even the plot itself. While I did enjoy that this book explored a stepparent and stepchild relationship, I didn’t feel especially sympathetic to either of them, as neither felt fully fleshed out to me. This book was more so focused on the events happening as opposed to how particular events made the characters feel. This could be a positive for some readers, but for me, this book left me wanting more. I don’t always give books a rating, but if I were to rate this one, I would probably give it a 2.5/5. It certainly wasn’t a bad book by any means, but there just was something that made me find it a bit lacking. I know that my opinion is in the minority here, as this book was even featured in Reese Witherspoon’s book club!

I’m curious to know if anybody else read this book, if so, did you enjoy it? Let me know!

Thank you so much for reading!

XOXO,

Mattie Mae
